Roofing & Siding

The envelope.
It's everything.

A roof is the difference between a home that stays beautiful for thirty years and a home that's quietly rotting from the top down. We install and repair roofing and siding the way it has to be done in coastal Northern California — with attention to wind, salt, sun, and the next big storm.

Where most envelope work goes wrong.

Roofs and siding fail at the transitions — flashing around chimneys and skylights, the joint where the wall meets the roof, around windows and doors, at penetrations for vents and wires. The shingle field itself is rarely the problem. The boring details are.

We've been re-roofing and re-siding Marin homes for two generations. We know which materials hold up to the coastal exposure, which flashings are required vs. just code-minimum, and how to tie a new roof into a hundred-year-old wall without creating the next leak. The shingles are easy. The flashing is the craft.

What we install & repair.

Composition roofing

Architectural and designer asphalt shingles. GAF, CertainTeed, Owens Corning. 30-50 year warranty.

Standing seam metal

Painted Galvalume or zinc. Modern look, 50-70 year life, low maintenance.

Cedar shake & shingle

Classic Marin look. Properly installed and treated to maximize life in coastal exposure.

Tile & synthetic slate

Concrete tile, clay tile, synthetic slate alternatives. Coordinated with structural for proper load.

Cedar siding

Lap, channel, and shingle. Stained or painted, properly back-primed before install.

James Hardie fiber cement

Lap, panel, and trim. Factory-finished color or field-paint. Modern, fire-resistant, low maintenance.

Stucco repair & re-stucco

Patch repair, re-coat, full strip-and-replace. Color-matched and properly textured.

Gutters & downspouts

Seamless aluminum and copper. Sized for actual roof area, leaf guards where they make sense.

Flashing & weatherproofing

The detail work that determines whether the system actually works. Skylights, chimneys, vents, wall ties.

Roofing & siding FAQ.

How do I know if my roof actually needs replacement? +
Visible curling, cracking, or missing shingles; granules in the gutters; daylight visible from the attic; interior leaks or stains. We'll do an honest inspection and tell you whether you need a full replacement or whether targeted repairs will buy you 5+ more years. Plenty of roofs we look at don't need to be replaced yet.
What roofing materials do you work with? +
Composition asphalt (the most common, 30-50 year), standing seam metal (50-70 year, premium look), cedar shake (classic Marin look, 30-40 year), tile, and synthetic slate. We'll match the material to the architecture, the climate exposure, and the budget.
What about siding? +
Cedar shingle and lap (most common in older Marin homes), James Hardie fiber cement (modern, low-maintenance), stucco repair and re-stucco, and engineered wood. We handle the full envelope — siding, trim, soffit, fascia — as one system, not piecemeal.
How long does a roof or siding job take? +
A standard composition re-roof: 3-7 days. Standing seam or cedar shake: 1-3 weeks. Full siding replacement on a 3,000-sq-ft home: 2-4 weeks. Weather can shift the schedule — we plan around it rather than fight it.
Do you handle insurance claims? +
We can support the inspection and documentation side, but we don't broker insurance work. If you're filing a claim for storm or fire damage, we'll provide a detailed written estimate and meet with the adjuster. Final negotiation is between you and the insurer.
